What is GIMPS? (click to expand)

The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) is a long-running distributed computing project started in 1996. It searches for Mersenne primes — enormous prime numbers of the form 2p − 1.

GIMPS has discovered the last 18 record-breaking primes, including the current largest known prime:

2136,279,841 − 1 (41,024,320 digits, discovered October 2024 by Luke Durant)

Why participate in GIMPS? (click to expand)
  • Contribute to genuine mathematical discovery
  • Stress-test and benchmark hardware
  • Join a global community of enthusiasts
  • Completely free and runs quietly in the background

How to Join GIMPS

  1. Visit mersenne.org
  2. Download Prime95 (Windows) or mprime (Linux/Mac)
  3. Create a free PrimeNet account
  4. Configure and start testing (PRP tests recommended for new users)
